Best Hair Loss Treatment Subscription Services

If you’ve ever experienced hair loss you know how frustrating it can be. One day you’ve a full head of hair and the next you’re shedding like there’s no tomorrow.

The best treatments work over months and years, so they need to be applied regularly. This is where subscription services come in useful. From prescription medications to natural supplements, providers like these can deliver pretty much any hair loss solution to your door.

After trying a few of these treatments myself, I decided to put together this short list of some of the best hair loss treatment subscription services on the market today.

A Quick Answer:

Although it’s pricier that some of the other subscriptions on this list, Happy Head was the one that worked best for me. It worked quicker than some of the other options I tried, and I was able to get a customized formula that didn’t irritate my scalp the way standardized products did.

How I chose these hair loss treatments

When I began my hair regrowth journey, I put together a list of the most important factors to check off before signing up, namely:

Effectiveness

Like any of you, if I’m going to hand over my hard-earned cash for a hair-loss solution I want to know it’s going to work, ideally with an approximate time frame for when you’ll start seeing results.

Personalization

I wanted a treatment that was tailored to my individual needs. This was important as while male pattern baldness like mine is common, my scalp had a bad reaction to over the counter minoxidil. This is why the best providers customize their formulas to provide an effective and safe hair loss treatment.

Ease of Use

This includes checking how easy the consultation process is. Is this a quick video consult or do I need to fill in a form with hundreds of questions first? You should also check the courier used to deliver treatments, as well as how often they’ll arrive on your doorstep.

Pricing

In my own case I wasn’t chasing the least expensive option, but one that offered value for money. I didn’t mind paying a little more for something that I knew would work. You’ll also need to decide on pricing based on your own budget and needs.

Customer Support

Once you start applying your hair loss treatment, you also need to know the provider has your back. Do they offer followup consultations in case you have further questions? How easy are these to arrange?

The Best Hair Loss Treatment Subscription Services

I narrowed down my list to the following services.

Happy Head

This subscription service is one of the best known for offering personalized hair loss treatment.

Its approach involves asking detailed questions about your medical history, as well as using basic information like your gender, age, and hair loss concerns.

Happy Head makes use of board-certified dermatologists to tailor hair loss formulas. They can draw on around 200 different ingredients in different concentrations to craft a solution that works specifically for you.

What Happy Head Offers

  • Prescription-strength topical solutions, including ingredients like finasteride, minoxidil, dutasteride, and latanoprost
  • Oral hair loss treatments e.g. minoxidil capsules
  • Hair thickening shampoos and conditioners
  • Free virtual followup visits with dermatologists during treatment

Why I Love It

While my experience won’t necessarily be the same as yours, I switched to Happy Head from Hims after experiencing irritation with Hims’ standard minoxidil formula. The Happy Head dermatologist who formulated the topical solution made sure it was gentle on my scalp, plus I saw results in around ten weeks.

The fact that Happy Head can adjust the ingredients and/or concentrations of medications based on your feedback is what really sets them apart.

Happy Head Pros

Highly customizable formulas

While not everyone needs a tailored hair-loss solution, I found Happy Head’s crafted treatments were much kinder to my skin. You also have the peace of mind of knowing that if one treatment isn’t working for you, the dermatologist can rework the formula.

Free shipping

Happy Head offers free shipping on all orders (both prescription and non-prescription) via USPS First Class / Ground Advantage. This makes for very reliable deliveries.

Six month guarantee

Subscribers can cancel subscriptions at any time with no kill fee. If you’re unhappy with a prescription product, you can return it within six months of starting treatment for a full refund.

Happy Head Cons

US shipping only

Currently, Happy Head doesn’t ship outside the USA. This is in contrast to more flexible hair loss treatment subscription services like Hims, which has a dedicated UK site.

Higher price points

Happy Head’s customized topical solutions cost between $59 and $119. This is more expensive than standardized treatments like oral minoxidil capsules.

Hims

As a popular telehealth company, Hims offers very reasonably-priced hair loss products, along with treatments for other male health issues like erectile dysfunction. (In the interests of equality, I did discover that they have a sister brand named ‘Hers’ but let’s stay on topic!)

Hims offers a straightforward approach to hair loss solutions, making it an ideal entry-level solution that’s not too hard on your wallet.

What Hims Offers

  • Oral tablets (including finasteride and minoxidil)
  • Topical minoxidil (both in a solution and a foam)
  • Hair loss sprays (e.g. a combination of minoxidil and finasteride)
  • Thickening shampoos and conditioners
  • Biotin (vitamin B7) gummies

Why Hims is Great

One of the main reasons I first signed up for Hims is because they make it simple. You have a quick online consultation, plus the website makes it easy to sign up for subscriptions. Hims’ standardized hair loss treatments are also great if you haven’t tried anything else before – they may be all you need.

Hims Pros

Affordable pricing

This is probably Hims’ main USP. Prices start at just $15 per month for its topical Minoxidil solution, with automatic refills. Definitely worth trying if you’ve just started trying to regrow your hair.

Flexible subscriptions

You can save a little more with Hims by signing up for longer subscriptions. For example, Hims’ Hair Loss Duo is $39 per month on its 3-month plan ($117 total). However if subscribers sign up for the 12-month plan ($384 total), this works out at $32 per month.Total savings per year: $84.

Good shipping options

Prescription products are shipped free. As I mentioned before, Hims also has more international shipping options, as it can use FedEx, DHL, and USPS for deliveries.

Hims Cons

No customization

Hims’ standardized hair-loss solutions might work for you. But if they don’t, you’re out of luck. There’s no way to customize the formulas for products like its topical solutions.

OTC products shipping fee

Any Hims over-the-counter products incur a $5 shipping fee. This isn’t much, but can rack up if you order from the site often.

Keeps

Unlike Hims, Keeps focuses solely on issues affecting men’s health like male hair loss – and they do it well. The platform offers straightforward consultations with licensed doctors, who can prescribe you FDA-approved medications.

What Keeps Offers

  • Oral tablets (minoxidil and finasteride)
  • Topical minoxidil (as a solution and spray)
  • Thickening shampoos and conditioners (with biotin and saw palmetto)

Why Keeps is Great

Of all the hair loss subscription services I’ve seen, Keeps is the best at combining convenience with affordability. There’s a short initial consultation, meaning you can begin tackling your hair loss in minutes for just a few dollars.

Keeps Pros

Affordable bundles

Treatment plans work out at just $10 per month, though subscribers are billed quarterly.

Simple subscription model

Unlike other hair loss subscriptions, Keeps follows the same model for all treatments. By default, you’ll receive a three month supply each time your subscription box arrives. You can also choose to receive a six or twelve month supply instead.

Free consultations

Another big plus point in Keeps favor – initial consultations are free. After that, annual consultations cost just $5 each.

Keeps Cons

Limited product range

Keeps takes a ‘no-frills’ approach to hair loss. This means a small number of standardized hair-loss treatments, which means you may not find more exotic ingredients. You also can’t customize Keeps’ hair loss formulas to your needs.

No video consultation

Other hair loss treatment services I’ve used always have a video meeting with a medical professional. To order from Keeps, you can just send in pictures of your hair line to get a prescription. Whether or not you see this as a con depends on how much you enjoy video calls. Personally, I prefer a live meeting so I can ask questions!

Nutrafol

This platform’s main selling point is that it offers drug-free hair-loss treatments. The website’s very keen to point out that these are all backed up by clinical studies. Nutrafol’s formulas mainly focus on common root causes of hair loss like stress, hormonal imbalances, and bad nutrition.

Why Nutrafol is Great

I want to be clear, this isn’t hippy-dippy stuff. Although Nutradol’s results can take longer (3-6 months), I’ve seen subscribers report improved hair thickness. It’s a great choice for those who dislike prescription meds. Treatments are available for both women and men.

What Nutrafol Offers

  • Gender-specific treatments e.g. Nutrafol Women’s Balance and Nutrafol Men
  • Treatments suitable for all hair types (tested on men and women of various ethnicities)
  • Physician-formulated products

Nutrafol Pros

Drug-free ingredients

Although Nutrafol products are endorsed by doctors, they don’t contain any prescription drugs. This makes this the best solution for people who prefer more natural hair loss treatments.

Whole-body benefits

Nutrafol adopts a holistic approach to its products, so claims that supplements can also reduce stress and increase the quality of your sleep. I have seen online reports of this by subscribers but encourage you to do your own research.

In-house doctors

This is the only hair-loss treatment platform I’ve encountered that has in-house naturopathic doctors. You’ll need to complete a short ‘Hair Wellness’ quiz before being connected. It takes around 5 minutes.

Nutrafol Cons

Results can take longer

Relative to prescription hair loss solutions (especially those customized to your needs, it can take longer to see any results from using Nutrafol products.

Higher pricing point

Products like Nutrafol’s Women’s Balance cost $79 per month for a standard subscription. You can save 15% on this by paying upfront for three month’s supply ($224) or 20% by paying for six month’s $422. Shipping is free for subscription orders but there is a charge for one-off and/or international purchases.

So, which hair loss treatment subscription service is the best?

After trying various hair loss solutions and doing some careful online research, I’d have to say that Happy Head is the best.

Cards on the table, it’s pricer than alternatives like Hims and Keeps. Still, I feel that the results justify the upfront investment.

This is firstly down to the fact that consultations are managed by board-certified dermatologists. These guys (and gals) are much more clued up about hair and skin problems than your run of the mill general practitioner.

Not only that, but the dermatologists can tailor a hair-loss formula just for you, using hundreds of ingredients and bespoke concentrations. This makes it perfect if you have specific needs like sensitive skin (as I did) or are dealing with more stubborn hair loss, which hasn’t responded to standard treatments.

The only reason I’d advise against Happy Head is if you’re outside the USA, as the site doesn’t offer international subscriptions.

Honorable mentions

There’s no one-size-fits-all hair loss treatment. That’s why I’d say if you’re just starting out, you should consider entry-level options like Hims or Keeps. Standardized treatments like minoxidil (Rogaine by any other name) may be just what your follicles need to start sprouting again.

Special mention should also go to Nutrafol, as the only hair loss solution listed here that uses all-natural ingredients. There are even specific products for vegans that don’t use any ingredients derived from animals. You may need to wait a little longer to see results, but you can do so without compromising your ethics or risking side effects or sensitivities from stronger drugs.
