If you’re in your 40s, not getting enough sleep, and feeling low in energy or tired most of the time over the past few months, I feel you–I have been there!
As a PhD in Biology and a health enthusiast, I refuse to accept the premise, ‘I think I am getting old.’ If something’s changed and I don’t feel like myself, I want to know the reason, rather than thinking it’s the stress from work and home.
When I started feeling like I was slowing down in the past, I realized that I wanted more than just typical lab testing. Instead, I began looking for a comprehensive, data-driven service that could interpret my recurring lab results and provide clinical and lifestyle guidance to improve my overall health and longevity.
The good news is that there are several subscription-based hormone and biomarker testing services that can conveniently test your hormone levels and relevant biomarkers without any hassle. You can also track your health over time rather than relying on your yearly health check-ups, which often don’t include the tests these providers offer.
Most importantly, these subscription hormone testing services can help you diagnose serious health issues early, especially if you have a history of cancer or chronic disease in your family.
Bottom Line Up Front
Here are my top five picks.
Everywell: Best for those who want to get tested for a wide range of biomarkers at the comfort of their home, without compromising on the data quality and credibility.
Function Health: Best for those who want high-frequency biomarker testing with trend tracking and expert pattern analysis over time.
InsideTracker: Best for those who want AI-driven insights with wearable integration and the flexibility to upload and analyze external lab data.
Lifeforce: Best for those looking for outcome-based solutions where you can combine biomarker testing with ongoing optimization of health and longevity, combined with ongoing guidance.
Marek Diagnostics: Best for those looking for budget-friendly and flexible testing services without any follow-up or guidance.
Subscription Hormone & Biomarker Testing Services: What and why?
Basically, these platforms are designed to give you easy, regular access to your comprehensive health data. This isn’t one-time testing that you do and then forget; you track your parameters regularly and consistently, building a clear picture over time.
Their workflow is simple:
- Sign up for a membership or plan.
- Choose between an at-home test kit or a blood draw at the lab.
- Get your sample analyzed.
- Results available in an online dashboard.
- Track your biomarkers over time.
Depending on the platform you choose, you can measure the following biomarkers, among others:
- Metabolic markers (glucose, insulin, cholesterol, liver enzymes)
- Hormones (cortisol, thyroid, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone)
- Nutrients (vitamins and minerals)
- Longevity and inflammation biomarkers
- Brain Functions
- Cancer biomarkers
While basic lab tests can be helpful, they will not cover all the relevant biomarkers to give you a full picture. Also, when you are looking for reasons, you need a holistic approach. This is where subscription-based services come in.
Their USP is the continuous monitoring, guidance, and detailed report of how your numbers change over time. They help you understand what’s happening inside your body and how you can address the issue by changing your lifestyle.
Key criteria to look for
I have shortlisted the best hormone and biomarker testing services based on the following features:
- Testing scope and frequency
- Dashboard and data tracking
- Clinical support
- Convenience
- Pricing
Let’s learn more about our finalists and how they score in these criteria.
Everlywell
Everlywell is an innovative at-home testing option that delivers a kit to your doorstep. Their USP is the innovative and research-backed kits that collect your dried blood spots, saliva, and urine and test them for the biomarkers you want, giving you convenience and data quality at the same time.
They offer a broad range of biomarker categories, ranging from daily health to digestive, sexual, and hormonal health. On top of that, they offer a comprehensive biomarker test panel (Everywell 360) comprising 83 biomarkers, as well as a multi-cancer detection panel with biomarkers for 50+ cancers.
You will have your biomarker levels tested annually, along with a personalized, clinician-reviewed care plan, follow-up consultation, tailored recommendations, and prescriptions.
While most of the biomarkers are tested using their at-home lab tests, some require in-person tests at the labs—something that’s clearly stated on their website to avoid confusion.
The good thing is that the results are available in a printable document that you can show your physician, and it also provides you with lifestyle insights and guidance. Along with the document, Everywell also displays results on a personalized dashboard in an easy-to-understand format, along with a wellness score that incorporates your biological age.
Test prices vary depending on the biomarkers you choose. Everywell 360 comprehensive test panel costs $299 and is FSA/HSA eligible.
Function Health
Function Health is a service provider that partners with Quest Diagnostics to assess, review, and identify patterns and red flags through biomarker analysis.
They have two tiers of screening: the first screening tests over 100 biomarkers related to the heart, thyroid, liver, blood, urine, pancreas, metabolism, brain, bones, sexual health, allergies, autoimmune diseases, and cancer, and the second screening retests 60+ biomarkers, with the option to add biomarkers that appeared abnormal during the first screening. An MRI or CT scan can also be added anytime, depending on your needs.
The biomarkers are tested every three to six months, results are reviewed by experts over time to identify trends, and personalized guidance on food and supplements is provided.
Function Health does not offer at-home services; a lab visit is needed for most of the tests. If you already have a diagnosed condition or you’re at risk of a serious health condition, the lab visits are worth the care and guidance they provide.
Like Everywell, you can share your results with your doctor or track them through your personalized dashboard, which breaks them down into an easy-to-understand format and provides a clearly defined plan of action.
The membership costs $365 (FSA/HSA eligible), which includes testing your biomarkers twice a year, along with the other benefits mentioned above.
Lifeforce
Lifeforce is your one-stop solution when it comes to biomarker testing, clinical guidance, health coaching, and data-driven personalized treatment plans, all to support your health and longevity.
Lifeforce tests 50+ biomarkers related to hormonal imbalances, critical nutrients, metabolic conditions, organ health, cardiovascular diseases, chronic diseases, and even cognitive decline. As if that weren’t enough, they even offer add-on panels for heavy metals, metabolic and cardiovascular health, and brain protection. Standard diagnostic testing doesn’t usually cover these specific biomarkers, and your doctor will typically order them if you already have symptoms or diagnosed conditions.
Lifeforce also retests you quarterly to track your progress and adjust your treatment plan accordingly. Ideal for those who prefer continuous monitoring of their health and wellness.
LifeForce displays your results in an interactive dashboard that provides a detailed report of your biomarker results, their ideal ranges, and even a LifeScore with biological age. You also get an in-depth consultation with an expert Lifeforce clinician (board-certified in 15+ specialties). Their USP is their ongoing guidance that helps you turn your clinical recommendations into actionable goals and direct access to their care team.
You get all this from the comfort of your home, since they offer mostly at-home blood draws, except for some specialized test panels that require a visit to their labs.
Lifeforce is a membership-based provider, and the prices are $199 monthly, $599 annually (core annual), $1548 (annual classic), $599 for one-time diagnostics, and $200-$850 for add-on panels (HSA/FSA eligible).
InsideTracker
InsideTracker is an advanced AI-driven testing service that analyzes your blood biomarkers and DNA through reports and a wearable tracker to enhance your healthspan by offering lifestyle recommendations from experts.
The membership includes testing biomarkers for 10 healthspan categories: cognition, fitness, hormonal imbalance, inflammation, endurance, recovery, gut health, heart health, sleep, and metabolism.
InsideTracker gives you the flexibility of uploading your blood reports from an independent service provider or InsideTracker to determine your biomarker’s optimal and suboptimal ranges and receive personalized recommendations and treatment plans. Their app syncs with a wearable fitness device that tracks your progress and optimizes your plans over time.
Your test results are reviewed once a year through follow-up calls, and there is a user dashboard with personalized data monitoring and AI-generated health recommendations based on your progress.
For $149 per year, you can upload your blood reports from your doctor, while paying $489 annually for platform access that includes blood tests, DNA tests, and wearable tracker data. Also, it is HSA/FSA eligible.
Marek Diagnostics
Marek Diagnostics offers the flexibility to choose between a comprehensive health panel, budget-friendly test panels, specialty panels for specific conditions, and individual biomarker analysis, which can be added to other panels or tested separately.
It tests for 80-130 biomarkers across its total health panels (comprehensive, complete, and executive), depending on what you need. Like Function Health, your blood sample is collected at one of their partner Quest labs.
Marek Diagnostics is primarily a lab testing platform where you order the tests and get the results with or without consultations, depending on the panel you choose. There is no follow-up included in their services.
However, if your test panel qualifies for guided optimization, you can get lab analysis, consultation, and a personalized plan.
The price for their total health panel ranges from $495 to $1950; testing individual biomarkers varies based on what you choose. It accepts HSA/FSA if you’re eligible.
My Final Thoughts
Honestly, subscription-based biomarker testing was not my first choice. I did go to my GP to find out answers and took the traditional blood tests prescribed. But the results were normal, and I was told, ‘There’s nothing to worry about; everything is fine.’ Confused why I was feeling so tired, I decided to look beyond the traditional lab testing.
FYI: I am not claiming these services can replace primary medical care. But they can certainly complement traditional health care by proactive testing, improving health markers, and early identification of risk factors for several conditions and diseases.
More and more people are going for comprehensive biomarker testing services like Function Health and Lifeforce, as they offer biomarker dashboards that you can track regularly and improve your health. For the tech-savvy ones, Inside Tracker provides similar features and the flexibility to upload your blood reports. If you’re looking for something simpler, you can go for Everywell or Marek Diagnostics.
For me, I wanted something that could support my strength, energy, and overall wellness through ongoing support and guidance from the comfort of my home. This is where Lifeforce worked for me. The biggest pro for me: they did a thorough testing of relevant biomarkers and helped me understand what was happening in an easy-to-understand format, along with suggestions on supplements and lifestyle changes to improve my overall health.
In the end, it depends on what you want. Analyze your priorities and health situation to make the most suitable choice for your well-being.
