UrbanStems vs BloomsyBox: I Tried Both So You Don’t Have To

UrbanStems and BloomsyBox are two popular flower subscription services that get plenty of hype online. They seem similar enough on the surface, but they play out pretty differently in practice.

I’m not a florist, and I’m not super picky about my flowers — I just wanted to make my place look pretty without turning it into a whole craft project, and I also wanted a good go-to for gift-giving.

So I tried both and treated it like a mini-experiment. Here’s what actually mattered (and what didn’t) when it came to using UrbanStems and BloomsyBox.

The Short Answer

  • Pick UrbanStems if you want flowers to feel like a gifting experience, where the experience is curated and polished, and you open the box and go “oooh.”
  • Pick BloomsyBox if you want farm-fresh stems and don’t mind doing a little arranging (and if you’re fine with blooms arriving a little more bud-forward).

Both were solid experiences, and I’d reorder either. But if I’m paying for something non-essential, I want it to feel worth it, and UrbanStems gave me more of that “special” feeling.

Overall Vibe

UrbanStems: A Picture-Ready Experience

UrbanStems: A Picture-Ready Experience

UrbanStems feels like someone made design choices on purpose. The bouquet looked curated and balanced, and I didn’t have to “fix” it to make it look good. It was perfect right out of the box.

The unboxing itself felt like a whole moment. I was so caught up in the presentation and experience that I forgot to take pics! It’s not fancy in a luxury-brand way, though. It’s more like “this was packaged to make you smile.” It’s also easy to see why people use UrbanStems for gifting — you’re pretty much guaranteed to wow the person on the other end.

If you want flowers that look like you tried, UrbanStems is built for that: just trim ends, add water, and you’re done.

The only ongoing maintenance I had to do was lightly trimming the ends a couple of times and switching out the water. But you should be doing that with literally any floral arrangement you get.

BloomsyBox: Farm-Fresh Flowers Delivered (with Some Assembly Required)

BloomsyBox: Farm-Fresh Flowers Delivered (with Some Assembly Required)

BloomsyBox feels more like a fresh shipment of stems you get to play with, however you like. Mine arrived nice and healthy, but it wasn’t a finished centerpiece. I had to rearrange stems and adjust things to make it table-worthy. This can be exciting for a lot of people, but I didn’t like having to fuss with them.

It didn’t feel cheap, by any means; it just didn’t have that “wow” factor right out of the box the way that UrbanStems did. It felt more straightforward, like the value is in the freshness and the flowers themselves, and not the experience of receiving them.

They also lean into farm-direct sourcing and tend to ship blooms that are less open, so you get the satisfaction of watching them open over a few days. I think that’s a really cool concept and makes the life of your flowers feel longer (more on that later), but not ideal if you prefer to adorn your table or space with full blooms immediately — and it’s definitely a problem if you need an instant centerpiece for an event that night.

If you enjoy trimming, arranging, and doing a little DIY florist work, BloomsyBox scratches that itch. Just keep in mind that you’ll have to:

  • Spread stems out
  • Adjust heights
  • Pull a few out
  • Relocate until satisfied
  • Rearrange as blooms open and reveal what they actually look like

If your version of “special” means presentation + instant wow, UrbanStems wins easily.

Gifting Experience

UrbanStems: Better for Send-and-Impress Moments

UrbanStems: Better for Send-and-Impress Moments

The bouquets I’ve seen from UrbanStems tend to follow a tighter visual formula: cleaner color stories, more balance in stem height, and a stronger finished arrangement.

So, from a buyer’s perspective, UrbanStems makes more sense for occasions where the presentation is part of the purchase: birthdays, anniversaries, thank-you gifts, hosting, or anything where the flowers need to land with an immediate visual impact. Especially if I were sending flowers to someone else and couldn’t see the final result in person before they opened the box, I’d be more confident sending UrbanStems because it feels more gift-ready as a product.

They also have pre-made gift bouquets that come with things like homemade cookies, candies, etc. Or you can pick any arrangement, and a little selection box pops up before checkout that lets you add things like chocolates and wine.

BloomsyBox: Better for Repeat Deliveries or People Who Love Flowers Themselves

BloomsyBox: Better for Repeat Deliveries or People Who Love Flowers Themselves

BloomsyBox works better as a gift for someone who actually enjoys fresh flowers as an ongoing experience, not just as a “wow” moment on delivery day. This is because they lean more into the flowers themselves than the finished design — you’re going to get a varied stem length every time, and you won’t find much consistency here. I do love that there’s usually a nice stem mix, though, so you can arrange the bouquet in several ways.

You’re definitely buying the full life cycle of the flowers here, not just the first impression. For some people, that feels fresher and more interesting. For others, especially gift buyers, it can feel less impressive.

They do have a small selection of extra add-on gifts, but it’s mostly different vase designs and a candle.

Freshness and Vase Life

Freshness and Vase Life

UrbanStems: Arrive Ready; Expire Marginally Sooner

Because UrbanStems arrives already bloomed and ready, the side effect is that they expire just a bit sooner, lasting about 13–14 days before the petal edges begin to brown and dry. Of course, because you need a little extra time with BloomsyBox’s flowers before they’re at their best, the number of good days you get out of these two options is about the same.

BloomsyBox: More Bud-Forward (Longer Bloom Journey)

My Bloomsy flowers lasted about 14–15 days, including the time it took for some of the blooms to open. Again, this can be a great thing if you enjoy the slow burn as they reveal their true colors, but it’s not always ideal. Also, I did have a couple more delicate stems in one BloomsyBox delivery that needed a little extra babying to stay fresh and beautiful.

Pricing and Subscriptions

UrbanStems: Straightforward Tiers

UrbanStems pricing

UrbanStems lays out their tiers clearly:

  • Classic ($60/delivery): 15–20 stems; free shipping
  • Seasonal ($75/delivery): 20–26 stems; free shipping; free vase with first delivery

They also state you can cancel anytime via your subscription dashboard, so you’re not locked into a minimum, and there are no penalty fees to face.

BloomsyBox: More Options and Flexibility

BloomsyBox pricing

BloomsyBox offers weekly/biweekly/monthly options and starts at around $59.99, depending on the plan you choose. Their biweekly subscription is $69.99 and comes with free shipping plus super-easy cancellation. They also allow you to easily skip or pause, and you won’t be charged for skipped months — keeping you on board without forcing you to get an arrangement that you may not need at the moment.

Neither one made me feel locked in, and both are set up for people who want to try it without feeling stuck. It’s how all subscriptions should be these days, if you ask me.

My Verdict on UrbanStems vs BloomsyBox

Pick BloomsyBox if you:

  • Like arranging your own flowers (or at least don’t mind it)
  • Prefer a farm-fresh, bud-to-bloom experience
  • Want a subscription that’s very flexible in cadence (weekly/biweekly/monthly)

Pick UrbanStems if you:

  • Want flowers to feel like a gift or a personal treat
  • Care about low-effort design/presentation
  • Are buying for events, hosting, birthdays, anniversaries, or “I need this to look good RIGHT NOW”

If I had to choose just one, I’d go with UrbanStems. Not because BloomsyBox was bad (it certainly wasn’t); I just don’t want my flower delivery to come with a side quest. When money’s tight, I want nice things to feel like a treat, not a task.

That said, if you’re someone who genuinely enjoys arranging, or you want that farm-fresh bud-to-bloom experience, BloomsyBox makes a ton of sense and might even feel like the better value.
