One of my biggest pet peeves is shipping fees. I’m someone who will add those additional items to my basket, just to hit the “free shipping” offer, if it’s less than $20. I don’t know what it is within me but I just feel like I’ve beat the game if I can get free shipping.
I’m also someone who appreciates transparency in my purchases (or at least the illusion of transparency). Yes, I’m that nerd who will look at the terms and conditions of an online purchase and this is more true than ever when it comes to a subscription service. I’ve been burned before when I was in a rush to buy a gift for a friend at the last minute and thought a book club would be lovely for them. They loved it, but I got stung by a deal that seemed too good to be true.
So, I will go through a company’s website and their T&C’s, their FAQ’s and even veer away from a company if their wording is too vague, especially when it comes to pricing. Here’s what I’ve found while searching for wine clubs with free shipping to give me that ‘winning’ feeling.
Wine Insiders
With Wine Insiders, a club membership gets you 12 bottles of wine delivered to your door every 12 weeks. The service offers a starting gift of three bonus bottles, bringing your first delivery up to 15 bottles, as well as a very clear discount code that is mentioned in multiple places before you get to checkout which brings your first order down to just $99. You’d need to actively turn a blind eye to the discount code to miss it (reading this hits all of my bargain-loving warm feelings). After your initial special offer, you’ll receive free deliveries on every order (there is a small processing fee of $2.95 per order) and for each order you get a 5% “Pourback Program” credit.

After your initial special offer, they give free deliveries on every order (there is a small processing fee of $2.95 per order, but that’s negligible) and for each order you get a 5% “Pourback Program” credit.
Sure, Wine Insiders isn’t the most expensive wine club in this list, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t have great wines in their selection. From internationally award winning wines from the top regions around the world, you don’t have to sacrifice taste for value. There’s also mention of an occasional surprise in your box as a thank you for being a part of the club. I love the idea of opening up a delivery and finding a little thank you gift in the box but also not knowing when that’ll be. It adds an element of whimsy to the club membership, but also makes it feel kind of personal. Like when a friend gives you a small gift because they saw something and “just thought of you.”
Firstleaf
As I’ve made clear, I’m a sucker for a bargain. I look for quality, but I also want to feel like I’m getting the best deal out there. At first glance, Firstleaf’s wine club looks like a great offer for a high quality product. They have multiple club membership options, so for those with a more discerning palate or for someone with a bigger budget to indulge in delicious wines, this might be the place to go to. With everything from great looking wines in their “Classic” range to a “Fine Wine Plan” featuring award winning wines, there are options for multiple tastes and budgets.
However, while they offer two additional bottles with every 12 bottle plan (which definitely drew me in), and a special entry offer of $89 for the first box, their free shipping is only on your first order. After your first shipment, each box then goes from $89 up to $199, plus taxes and $29.95 shipping.

That said, there are definitely positives to joining a Firstleaf wine club. When joining Firstleaf, you’re asked to take a short quiz to figure out your tastes, so that the company can curate your delivery to your personal tastes. This would be beneficial for those who are more particular about the wines they enjoy. It could also challenge you if you’re interested in curating wines for a specific event to create a certain desired flow to the evening. They also offer $10 credit towards your next offer if you rate each of the wines within 30 days of delivery. This helps them to continue to improve their selections based on your preferences. The only “catch” is that you need to have at least tasted all 14 bottles within 30 days in order to rate them (Oh no!).
Winc

Winc is definitely the trendy wine club within this article. With Glamour being quoted “If you’re into Instagramming your cheese board, Winc is guaranteed to provide you with wine bottles that’ll look great with it.” and I can completely understand why. Looking through their selection there are some really fun labels, and some bottles that I’d totally pick up in the store on my way to a friend’s house because the label would be a fun talking point. Their quiz is also very fun, definitely aimed at younger Millennials or Gen Z customers.
One thing I found interesting about their wine club is that in your first order, if you let them choose for you, you get two of each bottle of wine. So, instead of getting 12 different bottles to try, you get 6 different types, but 2 of each. Before your next order you receive the list of wines they plan to send you but it’s still in the 2 bottles of each type format. They do include free shipping with every order but at $200 per box, you’re really absorbing the cost within the price per box.
Plonk

While Plonk does offer free shipping on all orders, they are by far the most expensive of the bunch. At $324.99 (and only a $10 off welcome offer), Plonk is definitely on the higher end of the scale. However, in saying that, they do have a lot to offer.
Plonk is the only wine club within this group to include rosé and sparkling wines in their mixed box. They also include a free double-hinge corkscrew, detailed tasting notes, a monthly shipment preview video, and expertly chosen recipes from Food52 to pair with your wines. Pair this (see what I did there) with the fact that all of their wines are organic, it does explain the higher price tag. They are also the only brand within this line-up to offer a monthly delivery option.
The club is more about the overall experience, which I can appreciate. Can I afford the price tag? That’s a separate question. But I appreciate the attention to detail and believe Plonk would make a wonderful gift for a wine enthusiast in your life.
Final Thoughts

Wine clubs offer a delicious way to discover wines from around the world that you might never come across at your local grocery or liquor store. Many feature carefully curated selections and bottles that are harder to find elsewhere, making every delivery an opportunity to try something new. And with your wines delivered straight to your door, exploring new varieties and regions becomes even more convenient.
Of course, getting your curated wines delivered to your door is also a big plus. Ultimately, it really depends on what you’re looking for in a wine club. Are you looking for a complete experience like an in-home wine tasting? Is it important to you that all the wines are organic? Is the label important to you, be it trendy, or as a status symbol? Or are you like me? Looking for delicious wines, delivered to my door, from all over the world, but at a great price? Personally, I do really appreciate a well made wine. I have had some bad bottles in my time.
Value is also a big part of it for me. I want to sip some nice wines while not worrying about how it will affect my budget for the rest of the month. So for me, Wine Insiders would be my wine club of choice. For you, it might be a different case (of wine).
