One of the best things about being a coffee drinker is that no matter how many coffees you’ve already tried, there will always be hundreds more that you have yet to taste. Coffee subscriptions in particular are one of the easiest ways to keep discovering new favorites without having to spend so much time personally researching which ones are worth your time.
Bean Box in particular is a great starting point because the subscription categories are fairly broad, which allows for a ton of variety. In my experience though, the more coffees I’ve tasted, the more specific my preferences have become. Maybe you’ve found yourself in a similar place. It’s not that you don’t still want variety, you just have a better understanding of the coffees you consistently gravitate toward.
So if you’ve enjoyed the convenience and variety of your Bean Box subscription but want something more personalized to your taste, where should you look next? I’ve put together a list of other coffee subscriptions that put more emphasis on personalizing your coffee selection, so you can find the next best one for you.

Trade Coffee: Overall Pick

If your main priority is maintaining variety with picks that are more personalized to your taste, Trade takes the cake.
The biggest difference between Trade and other coffee subscriptions is how they select the coffees sent to you. With Trade, each coffee is matched specifically to your taste.
They’ve got a short but comprehensive quiz designed to hone in on your preferences. This includes things like your preferred roast level, taste profile, and even how you make and drink your coffee at home.

This is one of the first quizzes I came across that takes into account both how you make and drink your coffee at home (black, with cream, etc.). Trade then uses the answers to your quiz to build a taste profile and match you with coffees from their partner roasters. You can rate each bag that you receive and the longer you use it, the smarter their recommendations become.
Even though Trade’s goal is to personalize your coffee picks, the quiz also allows you to specify how much variety you want, so you don’t lose out on trying options a little outside your comfort zone. Every coffee is roasted (and ground for your brew type, if necessary) and shipped to order, so freshness is guaranteed.
Pros
- Coffees are matched specifically to your taste
- Most comprehensive quiz that takes more nuance into account
- Choice of whole bean or coffee ground specific to your brew type
- New coffee with every delivery, not just per month
Cons
- Works best with user engagement; not ideal for people who want a passive subscription
- Not as beginner-friendly if you don’t already know what you do/don’t like
2. Atlas Coffee Club: Widest Variety of Origins

If you’re a self-proclaimed single-origin coffee enjoyer, Atlas Coffee Club might be the one for you. Every year, they cup over 300 of the world’s best single-origin coffees, then select their favorites to send to you each month. This is a great way to travel the coffee globe from the comfort of your own home, from Ethiopia to Ecuador to Costa Rica.
To personalize your plan, you take a short quiz about your preferences, including your preferred brewing method, roast level, and taste profile. They even offer coffee pods compatible with Keurig and Nespresso machines for added convenience, something I haven’t come across in other subscriptions.
Every box that you receive is designed to be a curated coffee experience. Alongside each bag of coffee, you also receive a postcard with that month’s country of origin, the coffee’s tasting notes, and its history. And since they roast each coffee to order, you never have to worry about your coffee showing up stale.
Pros
- Offerings from over 50 countries
- Great way to try coffees that you don’t normally see on store shelves
- Postcards recommend best way to brew each coffee
Cons
- Coffees only rotate once a month
- Single-roaster model, not ideal if you’re specifically looking for more roasters
3. Mistobox: Middle of the Road

Similar to Bean Box, I would categorize Mistobox as another good starter subscription. Their short quiz makes it fast and easy to get started, and offers slightly more customization so the coffees delivered to you can be selected more intentionally. And since they partner with over 60 roasters, you certainly don’t have to worry about losing out on variety.
What I like about Mistobox is that you can set your delivery frequency with extreme specificity. Other subscriptions offer delivery on a weekly/monthly basis (or somewhere in between), while Mistobox allows you to specify down to the day. If you’re waste-conscious like me, optimizing your delivery schedule helps minimize stale or wasted coffee.
If you ever want to switch up your taste preferences or experiment with different roast levels, you can simply log into your account and update your Coffee Profile. Or if there’s a particular coffee you already really enjoyed or want to try next, you can add it to your Brew Queue to guarantee that’s what they send next.
Pros
- Incredibly specific delivery schedule
- Large pool of coffees and roasters to choose from
- Ability to revisit old favorites or queue something new picked by you
Cons
- Bags may range from 10-12oz, but you can’t choose which
- Size for ground coffee is default, not specific to your brew type
4. Driftaway: Best for Supporting Small
Transparency and sustainability are core parts of Driftaway Coffee’s mission. If you want to feel as good about the coffee you’re drinking as it tastes, this subscription is a great way to do so.
They’re committed to sustainable eco-friendly packaging, price transparency, and maintaining direct relationships with the farmers they work with.
Their subscription options are straightforward: choose a roast profile or brew type (espresso or cold brew), what size bag you need, and how often you want a new delivery. If you’ve never tried their coffees before, they’ll send an Explorer’s Box for your first delivery. This includes 3-5 samples of different coffees, plus access to a live or self-guided virtual tasting to help you determine which you like best.
From there, you can choose the coffees and taste profiles you like best for your future deliveries. You can also shop à la carte if you enjoy one in particular or just have your eye on something new. They roast every week on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday to make sure everything arrives fresh.
Pros
- All coffees come in eco-friendly, 100% compostable bags
- Access to virtual tastings
- Emphasis on supporting coffee producers
Cons
- Coffees only rotate once a month
- Single-roaster model, limits roaster variety
5. Podium Coffee Club: Honorable Mention

Podium Coffee Club only sources coffees from the absolute best roasters from across the country. Every roaster they work with is an award-winning roaster that has literally stood on the podium at a major U.S. coffee competition (i.e. U.S. Coffee Championship, Golden Bean).
What better way to make sure you’re only getting the best of the best coffees than to receive them from the roasters at the very top of their game?
As unique as this model may be, it does come with a few limitations. The only elements you can actually customize is your subscription’s tier and the size bag you receive each month. They also only ship whole beans, presumably to preserve freshness, but that means you’ll have to sit this one out if you don’t have a grinder at home.
They roast at the same time each month (between the 5th and the 10th) and ship within 24 hours. If you’re not super picky about your delivery schedule, at the very least you can rest assured that something in the top 1% of all coffees in the world will reliably show up on your doorstep at the same time each month.
Pros
- All coffees represent the highest tier of specialty coffee
- Pool of award-winning roasters only
Cons
- Least flexible delivery schedule
- Not an option for people without a grinder at home
- Lack of personalization (even the most objectively good coffee may not suit your preferences)
Choosing a Coffee Subscription That Matches Your Taste

At some point with coffee subscriptions, you stop being impressed just by variety. It’s not that trying new coffees gets old, it’s that you start noticing patterns in what you actually enjoy. Lighter roasts versus darker ones, clean and bright versus chocolatey and heavy, or even how much consistency you want from bag to bag.
Some people want a system like Trade Coffee that learns their preferences over time and gets more dialed in with each bag. Others prefer Atlas Coffee Club because it keeps things varied and feels more like a monthly tour of different origins.
Mistobox sits somewhere in the middle if you want control without having to think too hard about it. Driftaway tends to appeal more if sustainability and traceability matter just as much as taste.
Podium Coffee Club is more for people who just want consistently high-end roasters without needing to customize much at all.
What’s interesting about all of these subscriptions is that they’re really solving different versions of the same problem. Some are trying to optimize discovery, others are trying to optimize convenience, and a few are basically built around curation or values like sustainability or competition-level quality.
So, it’s probably more useful to ask which one fits your habits the best. The right Bean Box alternative is going to be the one you don’t have to think too hard about and can enjoy every day.
